A free educational resource that enables the detailed online exploration of archaeological site of the Athens Acropolis.

Take a virtual ‘walk’ through the Athens Acropolis. You will find yourself among daylight and night views of the Temple of Athena Nike and the Propylaea, you will stand inside the Parthenon and the Erechtheion, you will enjoy the view of Athens from the Belvedere, you will stroll by the walls surrounding the Acropolis hill.

For your travel and research purposes, close-up views of the monuments will show you the erosion of the marble, the cracks, the removals and the reparations. Overviews of the monuments will give you various perspectives of the architecture and the proportional location of each monument.

You will be able to compare the structures and visualize additional objects and movement, utilizing the Tour as a primary study aid and a point of reference.

You may access the site remotely, at any time, to select paths that you may not take as a physical visitor, to refine your impression of the Acropolis and to enrich your storytelling to children or friends.
This immersive ‘visiting’ experience is achieved with panoramic and high-resolution images of all the main monuments, accompanied by historical, archaeological and restoration information, as well as a descriptive map, all accessed through a practical user interface.

The Acropolis Virtual Tour was commissioned by the Acropolis
Restoration Service, Greek Ministry of Culture.

The application is an initiative of the Acropolis Restoration Service YSMA and comprises an upgrade from a previous version with a focus on extending the app’s functionality to both stationary and portable devices. The decision to adopt "state of the art" technological solutions to "bring online" the entirety of the archaeological site is not merely a statement for the preservation work undertaken by the institution, but also a great contribution to the institutions mission to promote access to cultural heritage. Enhanced visual access may be used as a starting point for interested parties and potential visitors to get to know the monuments, but also as a scientific or educational tool to enable research in various disciplines.

The application has been created through the collaboration of the Documentation Office of YSMA with Culturplay that specializes in the provision of digital media solutions and interarctive tools for the cultural heritage domain.
